Forest Service. Strip mining is favored when the overburden—the overlying rock strata—is typically feet or less in thickness, but it can still be economical with an overburden thickness of up to feet [4, 18].

Another factor that is considered when determining the economics of strip mining is the stripping ratio, which is the ratio of overburden. In Florida, the phosphate rock is extracted by a process referred to as strip-mining. Unlike mining in other states, phosphate deposits are found closer to the surface, about feet below ground.
